ADDRESSING THE PHYSICIAN SHORTAGE

Addressing the Physician Shortage by Creating Opportunity & Pathways for Health Science Students
By 2032, the United States will face an expected physician shortage of an estimated 122,000 doctors with over half of that shortage directly impacting primary care in rural and historically underserved areas.*

SOLUTION

To create more doctors, we need more diverse students to be attracted and accepted into professional health programs. Tiber Health was founded on a solution for this growing shortage by developing an education methodology and technology that would enable scalable medical education and create new pathways to professional health programs for health science students, especially students coming from untraditional backgrounds.

RESULTS

82% OF MSMS STUDENTS HAVE GONE ON TO STUDY MEDICINE AT A PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL.
Tiber Health has created partnerships with universities across the US to offer the Master of Science in Medical Sciences curriculum that mirrors the 1st year of LCME-accredited medical school. Using the same analytics technology and dynamic methodology developed by Tiber Health, the program allows students to bolster their science foundations, their overall academic portfolio, and present an accurate, realistic prediction of how they will perform as a Year 1 medical student sitting for the USMLE Step 1 exam on their professional health school application.

The MSMS curriculum, has helped the majority of our graduates not only gain acceptance into medical and health sciences programs but also out-

Proven Success at Ponce Health Sciences University

Improving Learning Outcomes & Creating New Pathways to Medical School
In 2013, Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU) was struggling with low USMLE board scores, serious financial distress, and faced with losing their accreditation.

SOLUTIONS

Tiber Health saw an opportunity to implement Dr. David Lenihan’s academic methodology, flipped classroom, and predictive model to improve learning outcomes and board performance. By improving overall student performance and structure, the University would be able to avoid accreditation challenges, restructure finances, and position the school to be more attractive for recruiting new students.

RESULTS

A STRUGGLING UNIVERSITY BECAME A THRIVING EXAMPLE OF SUCCESS, FREE OF ACCREDITATION WOES AND FINANCIAL DISTRESS
Within 18 months of implementing Tiber’s curriculum delivery platform, the school experienced a transformation. It went from a struggling university to a thriving example.
Increased Board pass rates from 62% to 93%
Increased medicine degree applications by 30.4%
Increased residency match rate from 85% to 89%
Retained over 90% of faculty and staff
The biggest contributing change came when Tiber Health helped PHSU pull the first year of the medical school curriculum out as a separate graduate program, the Master of Science in Medical Sciences (MSMS). The program admitted students who would otherwise be turned away and put them through the same rigor and curriculum and sitting side by side with Year 1 MD students in the newly designed dynamic classroom.
Better prepared for Year 1 MD school, the MSMS graduates now had the opportunity to become specialist physicians, and the program equips these students to outperform their peers.
75% of students in the first MSMS class received admission into medical school
Increased career matches, even for those not admitted to medical school
MSMS students admitted to medical school outperform their classmates
 (100% USMLE board passage rate)
At Ponce Health Sciences University, the Tiber methodology has been in use for several years and has dramatically increased the number of students admitted into medical school. The innovative curriculum and methodology is now available to be offered at partnered universities via Tiber Health’s education technology division.

CASE STUDY: INCREASING DIVERSITY

Increasing Diversity in Medical Schools and the Physician Workforce through our Partner Universities
Over the last decade, there have been sustained efforts to diversify the physician workforce. While the 2009 LCMS guidelines required medical schools to develop programs or partnerships designed to “make admission to medical education more accessible to potential applicants of diverse backgrounds,” the biggest challenge remained: There simply aren’t enough applicants to accept to make a meaningful shift in student body diversity.

Every year, an average of 49,284 applications are received by medical schools by MD hopefuls:
Only 20,630 of those applications will be accepted and will begin Year 1 study.
Of accepted 1st year MD students, only 19,281 (an estimated 93%) will make it to graduation and residency where they will be added to the workforce.

SOLUTION

Demographic representation has been shown to improve health care access for underserved populations, improve the cultural effectiveness of the physician workforce as a whole, and improve medical research and innovation for all populations. The Tiber MSMS methodology, delivered by PHSU, creates an alternate pathway to medical school for students who are overlooked, might have already been rejected from medical school, or haven’t previously considered an option – and typically come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.

RESULTS

83.68% OF THE CURRENT MSMS STUDENT BODY ACROSS ALL TIBER PARTNER UNIVERSITIES IS DIVERSE.
By creating access to a program outside the norm, Tiber Partners are attracting quality candidates who may not have considered a pathway to medical (or other professional health sciences school) a realistic option.

Tiber's University Partners are graduating MSMS students with the tools, skills and competency to outperform the stereotypical Year 1 MD student. This promising outcome may finally bring change to the MD applicant pool, triggering a new shift that could permanently increase the diversity of future practitioners.
