When our CEO Dr. David Lenihan initiated the Master of Science in Medical Sciences (MSMS) program at Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU) in 2014, the university was navigating challenges with accreditation, finances and medical school admissions. Within 18 months, the MSMS helped to reverse those trends and set the university on a path to renewed growth and stability.
The Tiber Health academic methodology, including a flipped classroom and the Tiber Health Predictive Analytics platform, produced MSMS graduates who were better equipped to succeed in the MD program. In fact, 75% of students from the first MSMS class obtained admission into medical school.
A Thriving Example of Success
By 2016, PHSU had experienced a transformation:
- Increased MD program applications by 30.4%
- Increased USMLE Step 1 Exam pass rates from 62% to 93%
- Increased residency match rate from 85% to 89%
- Retained over 90% of faculty and staff
Plus, MSMS students who were admitted to medical school outperformed their classmates by achieving a 100% first-time pass rate on the USMLE Step 1 Exam. Even students who didn’t go on to medical school now held master’s degrees, preparing them for better career opportunities.
In the years since they launched the MSMS program, PHSU has continued to grow and expand their healthcare offerings. Today, PHSU is the sixth-largest medical school in the United States by enrollment. In 2024, they added a Dental Medicine program, becoming the first accredited private School of Dental Medicine in Puerto Rico and the first dental school to open on the island in more than half a century
There are four PHSU locations with plans to continue expanding globally: the main campus in Ponce, Puerto Rico; branch campuses in San Juan, Puerto Rico and St. Louis, Missouri; and a new international location in Tortola, British Virgin Islands that welcomed its inaugural class in the fall of 2025.
A Transformative Program, Available Nationwide
Since helping PHSU launch the MSMS in 2014, we’ve constantly refined our curriculum, improved our online learning environment, and enhanced our student predictive analytics platform to incorporate the latest machine learning and AI technology.
We’ve also added a dedicated Community Development and Career Pathways Manager to help ensure that students have access to the tools, guidance, and connections they need to thrive on their academic and professional journeys.
As of March 2025, the MSMS program that helped turn PHSU around is now available at partner universities across the country.
